Obituary for Barbara Jean Lavallee

Barbara Jean Lavallee, 75, beloved wife of Charles F. Lavallee passed away peacefully November 22, 2018 surrounded by her family. She was born June 17, 1943 in Sterling, a daughter of the late Frank and Doris (Dufur) Miller. She resided in Plainfield for most of her life.
Besides her husband, she leaves 3 daughters and sons in-law: Mary and Robert Carangelo of West Hartford, Cherie and Brian Sage of Moosup, Laura and Matthew Murphy of Rhode Island; her 2 sisters Carolyn LeFrancois of Plainfield and Sharon Veilleux of Hawaii and her sister-in-law Frances Miller of Plainfield; 9 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Amy Lavallee and a brother, Frederick Miller.
Barb loved the outdoors and the simple things of life. She was known for her green thumb, enjoyed growing and tending to her flowers, both inside and out. On her own at age 17, she oftentimes worked numerous jobs, some of which were simultaneous. Some included Hank’s Dairy Bar, Interoyal, Radcliffe Inn, Pervels and the Plainfield Dog Track.
She was very observant and outgoing, she loved life and would treat all people the same. She would speak to anyone. She was a great cook and loved cooking for family and friends. She raised and nurtured all her girls, but especially Amy, her youngest, who had Down syndrome and a number of health issues. In addition to caring for Amy, Barbara also took care of her father-in-law, who struggled with dementia. Both eventually received services from hospice until their passing. Barbara’s relationship with the hospice workers became so strong, that she too volunteered her time.
She hosted exchange students from Panama and Mexico for five consecutive years. In addition to this selfless and caring act, she opened her doors to a woman from Rwanda, who lost her husband and was separated from her four children during the Rwandan genocide. This is just one more example of the type of person that Barbara was.
The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to hospice for their excellent care, especially her in- home nurses, homemaker and her reflexologist. We would also like to thank Dr. Dan Gerardi and staff at St. Francis Hospital for their support during this long, arduous journey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday (11-29-18) at 10:00 am in St. John the Apostle Church, Plainfield. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery.
