Obituary for Penelope Sandra Smith

Griswold – Penelope Sandra Smith, age 68, passed away at Colonial Health and Rehabilitation in Plainfield, CT on February 25, 2019.

Penny was born on March 16, 1950, in New Haven, CT, a daughter to Eleanor (Chase) and James Lewis Burkle. She was a graduate of Guilford HS in 1968.

She is survived by her loving husband Jay G. Smith. They were married in December of 1970. With Jay serving in US Navy, they lived out west in California and Arizona until finally moving back to the Madison/Guilford area of CT where both Penny and Jay grew up. During their lifetime they lived “The American Dream”. They loved raising their family, time spent together waterskiing, making music and playing in many different bands together. Penny loved to sing and play the sax while Jay played guitar and keyboards. They were members of the Living Word Fellowship Church in Voluntown and also enjoyed playing music and singing in church. Penny graduated from the Huntington Institute as a licensed phlebotomist and from the Branford Hair Dresser’s Academy as a licensed hair dresser. Penny went on to work as a hair dresser for many years and was loved by all of her many clients. In reflection on her life she will be remembered as Jay’s one and only and enjoyed the great life that she lived.

In addition to her husband Jay, Penny is survived by children Michelle and Jay Jr. along with her grandson Keagan Smith.

Funeral arrangements are private and entrusted to the care of Dougherty Brothers Funeral Home 595 Norwich Road Plainfield, CT.
