Obituary for Russell “Tick” C. Franklin

Russell “Tick” C. Franklin, 64, passed away at his home in N. Windham, CT, Dec 1, 2018.
Born in Providence, RI, he was the son of Russell S. Franklin and Della M. McCulley.

At an early age, Russell showed an interest in artifacts of antiquarian nature, started with enthusiastic bottle digging. Over time he developed a passion and keen eye for "finds" at yard and estate sales, becoming adept at selecting objects he could readily resell, often at a satisfying profit.

Russell married Anna Mortimer and, with the help of his Uncle Myron, built a home in Oneco for their family, where many gatherings and picnics were enjoyed. Traveling little except for work and visits to family out of state, he embraced fatherhood, exploring local woodlands with his children and teaching them about nature and life. He sought contentment with those closest to him, wherever he was.

After his marriage ended, Russell met Linda Fish, his beloved partner for two decades. His love for Linda, her daughter Heather Gwynn, and Heather's children Saige and Zak, whom he adored as his own grandchildren, was remarkable. Together they hosted birthday parties and gatherings, and the first pig roast for some guests. Tick's homemade French fries in a bag, meatballs, and crab cakes delighted all.

Russell enjoyed golf with his boys and tossing horseshoes. Years ago, he ran road races with his sister Judy. He outran her. Once, he teamed with nephew Daryl, and competed in a "pentathlon" consisting of basketball, bowling, golf, horseshoes, and a baseball throw. Yes, they won.

Russell was a good neighbor to Jim & his wife Weihong, and recently reconnected with his old school buddy, Brian Eskelinen, a reaffirming experience.

Work and community were also important to Russell. He won his first election in Oneco for Selectman. His employment included work as a Forman for Revere Textile of Sterling, and Director of Physical Plant at the Williams School in New London. He started his own telecommunications cable installation business and was excited to do an installation for the Kennedy family in Massachusetts. His sons Nathan, Parker, and even Jake also worked with him over the years. Nathan has since taken the lead, running it as his own.

With his sister Thelma, Russell shared a love of music, especially Neil Young and music from the 40’s. He enjoyed Western movies, especially those with John Wayne.

He was always willing to help his mom and her partner Lem with whatever they needed. When his sister Thelma moved back to Connecticut, he gave her and her three boys a place to stay. He talked about his Dad, wanting to visit him more. He was thoughtful, caring and sensitive. He had a nice smile and friendly twinkling eyes. Russell loved his three boys more than anything. He wanted to do things his way and that he did.

Survived by his mother Della M. McCulley ( partner Lem Francois Lemeiux); his father Russell S. Franklin (wife Shirley) of Maryland; sons Jake Franklin ( friend Amanda Carbonneau and son Cole), Nate Franklin (fiancé’ Julie Handleman), Parker Shaw Franklin; sisters Judy Poprosky ( husband Daniel) and Thelma Dawson: nephews, Michael, Ben, and Patrick Dawson, Daryl Poprosky (wife Tina); partner Linda Fish (daughter Heather Gwynn, grandchildren Saige and Zak).

Predeceased by his brother, Michael Wayne Franklin.
